Why Is My Business Not Showing Up in ChatGPT? (And How to Fix It)
The Problem: ChatGPT Doesn't Know You Exist
You've built a great product. Your website ranks on Google (sort of). But when someone asks ChatGPT "what are the best tools for AI lead scoring?" or "how do I monitor competitors automatically?" — your business is nowhere in the answer.
This is called a GEO gap (Generative Engine Optimization gap). It's the AI-era equivalent of not being on Google's first page — except it's more severe, because AI answers often replace the search results page entirely.
Why ChatGPT Isn't Mentioning Your Business
1. Your website has no content ChatGPT can learn from
If your website is mostly a homepage with marketing copy and no educational content, ChatGPT has nothing to associate with your brand in a knowledge context. It doesn't know what problem you solve, who you serve, or why you're the answer to someone's question.
Fix: Publish detailed articles, guides, and comparison pages that explain what you do, how you do it, and for whom.
2. Nobody is writing about you elsewhere
ChatGPT learns from the broader web. If only your own website talks about you, your brand signal is weak. Third-party mentions — reviews on G2, press coverage, podcast appearances, Reddit discussions — all contribute to ChatGPT knowing who you are.
Fix: Actively pursue customer reviews on G2/Capterra/Trustpilot, and guest articles on relevant publications.
3. Your content doesn't answer the questions being asked
ChatGPT recommends businesses when a user's question matches a need your product solves. If your content is about what you do but not about the problem the user has, there's no match.
Fix: Write content that starts with the user's problem, not with your product features.
4. Your competitors have more content and more mentions
If a competitor has 50 published articles about AI lead scoring and you have 2, ChatGPT has 25x more data about them. It will recommend them — not because they're better, but because they have more signal.
5. Your website's technical SEO is broken
ChatGPT's web crawlers skip pages that are slow, have broken canonical tags, or are blocked by robots.txt. If your pages aren't being crawled, they can't be learned from.
Fix: Run a website audit. Check that your sitemap is submitted, pages load in under 3 seconds, and no important pages are accidentally blocked.
6. You're using vague language instead of category-defining terms
ChatGPT maps businesses to categories. If your website says "we help businesses grow smarter" instead of "AI-powered lead scoring software," there's no category to map you to.
Fix: Use specific, searchable category language on your homepage and key pages. State clearly: what category you're in, who you serve, and what you replace.
The 5-Step Fix: Getting Your Business Into ChatGPT Answers
Step 1 — Audit your current ChatGPT visibility
Go to ChatGPT and ask the questions your ideal customers ask:
- "What are the best AI tools for [your category]?"
- "How do I [solve the problem your product solves]?"
- "[Competitor name] alternatives"
Make a list of every query where a competitor appears and you don't. That is your GEO gap report.
Step 2 — Create content for each gap query
For each gap, create a page that directly answers the question in the first 150 words, uses the query language in the H1/H2, includes specific data and examples, and is at least 1,000 words long.
Step 3 — Build third-party mentions
Get listed on G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, Product Hunt, and industry comparison pages. Each third-party mention is another data point that trains future AI models to know your brand.
Step 4 — Add an llms.txt file to your website
The llms.txt standard tells AI tools exactly what your business is, what it does, and which pages are most important. Place it at yourdomain.com/llms.txt.
Step 5 — Monitor and adapt weekly
AI model behavior changes as models are updated. Monitor your citations weekly and respond to drops immediately with fresh content.
How Long Until ChatGPT Mentions My Business?
- ChatGPT with browsing (live retrieval): Weeks to months, depending on query competition
- ChatGPT base model (training data): Only updates when the model is retrained — every 6–18 months
Focus first on queries where ChatGPT uses browsing (it shows "Searching..." when it does). These are the fastest to influence.
